Team Israel Defies The Odds

In every major tournament there are underdogs who capture the spotlight and force the audience to not only watch, but to pay attention to something or someone they normally would not. This years WBC is no different as Team Israel, who opened the tournament as 200-1 underdogs, have advanced to the second round after a stunning 3-0 start.

With their mascot “the Mensch on The Bench,” Team Israel is a unique team comprised of mostly minor leaguers mixed in with a few MLB veterans, with familiar names like Jason Marquis, Sam Fuld and Ike Davis leading the way.

Israel beat  South Korea 2-1 in its first game and then defeated Taiwan 15-7 a few days later. On Thursday, Israel beat the Netherlands 4-2 to finish in first place in Pool A.

As a team no one expected to survive the first weekend of The Classic, Israel is truly playing like it has already won the tournament. Heading into the second round people around the globe have begun to take notice as Israel is now at 25-1 odds to win the tournament.
